—What are the similarities and differences?

—Do you find the radio culture of the film attractive? Why or why not?

—How does the film view the telephone as a means of communication? Positive? Negative?

—The film was originally a “radio play.” Do you think the story would be more effective as simply audio?

—If the film were remade today, how do you think it would be changed? What technology would replace the telephone? How would this impact the story?

Watch the documentary Art and Copy

—Describe and discuss your favorite advertisement (provide link if possible) (advertisement doesn’t have to be in English).

—What is the form of the advertisement (poster, TV commercial, etc)?

—Why is it your favorite?

—Do you think it is effective at selling its product?

Week 5 Homework

Watch the film Hugo (2011) and answer the following question:

—This film was originally shot in 3-D. Why do you think the director chose 3-D to film a story about early cinema? What does 3-D have in common with the early cinema shown in the film?

Week 4 Homework

The film this week is a documentary on war photography.


If you are especially sensitive, you can skip this film and I can give you another assignment later.

Answer should be 100-200 words. Can be point form. Due by Monday, March 11th at noon (12 pm).

—Watch the documentary The Machine That Made Us

Answer ONE of the following questions. 

—Imagine the world without printing. How different would it be? Is printing more important than other technologies, like TV, the internet, telephone, radio? Why or why not? 

—Research the history of printing in Korea or China. How does it compare to the European history described in the documentary?
